Ceylon Satinwood 12" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"

Chloroxylon swietenia originates in the Celebes islands. In this yellowish-green colored species, figured logs are the rule but can be quite costly as they are usually cut into veneer. Uses for this fine timber include entire suites, furniture, brush backs, mirror backs, marine uses and many other projects. Interestingly, a large bridge with a single arch of 200' was also made from Ceylon Satinwood. The burning of the wood produces a fragrant, restful aroma that can induce a slumber in many and will kill Canaries. Today, Ceylon satinwood is a rare wood that is used for period reproduction furniture and is priced dearly, especially for figured stock. Dry and Ready to use. Air dried for two years. Occasional piece may have some residual moisture. Each piece has a tenon on each end.

Mexican Verdecillo

Verdecillo is the common name for this wood in Southern Mexico. "Verde" is the Spanish word for the color green. Also called Mexican greenheart. It is no relation to the green heart from Suriname. The wood is dense and closed grained, enabling the wood to take a glassy smooth polish without the use of a sanding sealer. Colors range from fluorescent lime green (sawdust) to leaf green, brown, and red. It is a fine wood which is suitable to use in fine articles, turnery, and box construction. Our stock is logged by hand and hauled out of the mountains with mules. Mexico. This piece features a slight live edge with interesting sapwood contrast.

Figured Black Cottonwood Mini Slab

Black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) grows in the Pacific Northwest. It favors moist, well-drained soil along waterways. The tree has roughly a 125-year life-span and commonly grows 80-100 feet and sometimes up to 150 feet tall. Diameters are 3-4' with a few up to 5' in diameter. The gray bark is thick and deeply fissured. Large leaves are heart shaped and contain summertime cotton tails for which it acquired its name. Since the trees grow in areas with water they were a gathering place for settlers in the 1800's on the Oregon Trail. The wood is soft and can be easily carved for children's toys and games. Thin stock also adapts well to painted or stenciled scroll saw projects. Working properties are similar to Basswood. Approved by the FDA for food containers, cottonwood works well for bowls or other turned articles. Shearing cuts with sharp tools prevents fuzzing that can occur with dull tools. Air dried and surfaced on two sides. This has been kiln dried and is ready to use. Nice, clean piece.

Peruvian Walnut Lumber

Peruvian Walnut, Juglans neotropica, is South American hardwood that tends to be darker than the species coming from North America or Europe, with a deep chocolate or reddish brown color in select boards. The wood will sometimes have a purplish hue, and may also contain streaks of lighter-colored wood mixed throughout the heartwood. The grain has a medium to coarse texture with medium-sized pores which may require filling for a smooth finish. A sanding sealer will do a nice job filling the pores. The grain is usually straight, but can be irregular. Grain patterns and figuring such as curl seem to be much less common in the tropical species than in the temperate species of Walnuts. The wood is typically easy to work provided the grain is straight and regular. The wood glues, stains, and finishes well. A faint, mild odor is present when being worked that is similar to Black Walnut. Peruvian Walnut may generate allergic reactions in some people. Usually most common reactions simply include eye and skin irritation. Use proper protection as with all species of woods. Common uses include: furniture, cabinetry, veneers, flooring, musical instruments, and fancy boxes. Kiln dried & ready to use.
