Ceylon Satinwood 12" x 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"

Chloroxylon swietenia originates in the Celebes islands. In this yellowish-green colored species, figured logs are the rule but can be quite costly as they are usually cut into veneer. Uses for this fine timber include entire suites, furniture, brush backs, mirror backs, marine uses and many other projects. Interestingly, a large bridge with a single arch of 200' was also made from Ceylon Satinwood. The burning of the wood produces a fragrant, restful aroma that can induce a slumber in many and will kill Canaries. Today, Ceylon satinwood is a rare wood that is used for period reproduction furniture and is priced dearly, especially for figured stock. Dry and Ready to use. Air dried for two years. Occasional piece may have some residual moisture. Each piece has a tenon on each end.

Figured Black Cottonwood Mini Slab

Black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) grows in the Pacific Northwest. It favors moist, well-drained soil along waterways. The tree has roughly a 125-year life-span and commonly grows 80-100 feet and sometimes up to 150 feet tall. Diameters are 3-4' with a few up to 5' in diameter. The gray bark is thick and deeply fissured. Large leaves are heart shaped and contain summertime cotton tails for which it acquired its name. Since the trees grow in areas with water they were a gathering place for settlers in the 1800's on the Oregon Trail. The wood is soft and can be easily carved for children's toys and games. Thin stock also adapts well to painted or stenciled scroll saw projects. Working properties are similar to Basswood. Approved by the FDA for food containers, cottonwood works well for bowls or other turned articles. Shearing cuts with sharp tools prevents fuzzing that can occur with dull tools. Air dried and surfaced on two sides. This has been kiln dried and is ready to use. Nice, clean piece.

Live Edge Pacific Koa (Guanacaste) Mantel

Known as Kelobra, parota, Guanacaste, and rain tree. Heavy when freshly cut, it quickly dries and retains little of its original wet weight. A hardwood, it is used for cabinets and furniture where it is indigenous. Called a Koa substitute in the states, it is similar in appearance and easier to work. Stable in service. Trees of 24-48" diameter are the average with some shade trees much larger in diameter. Central America. This slab is kiln dried and surfaced on two sides One face has large bark incursion approximately 2 ft x 1 ft wide. Surface checks on live edge. Some surface checks in sapwood. End splits on quarter sawn, either end. 5" end split on one end, 3" on other. Machine marks on live edge in one place. Nice ribbon figure! Can be used for virtually anything, but ideal for mantel. Considerable instrument grade wood in this piece if able to work around defects. Can also be cut into a bookmatched coffee table for additional cutting fee. This slab would be great for a mantel piece!

Machiche Lumber

Machiche is an excellent hardwood with deep browns, brick reds, and fine grain patterns. This makes the wood look somewhat like old growth Honduras Rosewood.  Though it is hard, the wood machines fairly easily, responding well to sharp cutters and also finishes well, bringing out beautiful highlights in the grain. Good sustain and crisp projection make this Central American hardwood a good choice for acoustical properties as well as dollar value. A few minor pin holes in sapwood. 3/16" bow that lays flat with minimal pressure. Nice color & patterns. Kiln dried.

Sinker Pine

Cut about a century or more ago, this Ponderosa Pine was long ago forgotten by the loggers of the late 1800's and early 1900's in Oregon's upper Klamath Lake. The loggers of the time began work in this area in the 1860s, where they used the lake to float large quantities of logs from one location to another. Some logs broke away from the log rafts during transit and were never recovered. Many sank fully or partially over time and some drifted to shore. Dating can be determined by the felling cut of the log and the ax cut faces which show that the tree was cut prior to 1910. Now, we are able to recover some of these "sinker" logs. Once the logs are cut, the wood is remarkably preserved by the low oxygenated cool waters of the lake. The outside 4-5" of some logs have an even blue stain. The heartwood is indistinguishable in color except by the fine ring count of the old growth trees. Most logs are carefully numbered and kept in boules or flitches so that larger projects can have matching grain. Live edges are kept on the boards for rustic edges for counters, bar tops, and bookmatched table sets. The ends are not trimed off for proof of age. This is a unique and beautiful historic wood that makes one of a kind projects. Our web site has pictures of Cook -Woods jet boats pulling these antique logs on Upper Klamath Lake. Great contrasting color and a variety of patterns. There are two loose penetrating knots and one knot with voids, along with surface checks on both faces. You will notice a rough edge opposite the numbers, as well as a significant twist.
