Choosing the right wood for your project starts with understanding its character, workability, and natural beauty. At Cook Woods, we carefully select domestic and exotic hardwoods for figure, stability, and performance. In this edition of Know Your Woods, we highlight two customer favorites: Maple Burl and Claro Walnut, both known for exceptional visual impact and versatility.
Maple Burl (Acer macrophyllum)
Maple Burl is one of the most visually dramatic woods available. Formed from an irregular growth on Big Leaf Maple trees, burl figure creates intricate swirls, clusters of eyes, and complex grain patterns that make every piece completely unique.
Color ranges from creamy white to warm amber, often with striking contrast and depth that comes alive under finish. Because of its irregular grain structure, Maple Burl is especially popular for projects where strong visual character is the goal.
While burl material requires sharp tools and careful handling, it machines and finishes beautifully when properly stabilized and sealed. The result is a smooth surface that highlights its remarkable detail.
Common uses:
Turned objects, knife scales, musical instrument accents, boxes, furniture details, and specialty woodworking projects.
Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsii)
Claro Walnut is a premium hardwood from the Pacific Coast of the United States, prized for its rich color, flowing grain, and outstanding figure. It often displays deep chocolate browns, warm reds, purples, and beautiful contrast between heartwood and sapwood.
Claro Walnut has long been favored for fine rifles and shotguns, as well as furniture and custom guitars. Compared to Eastern Walnut, Claro Walnut is often sought after for its dramatic color variation and figure.
Despite its density, Claro Walnut works well with sharp tools and responds beautifully to finishing. With proper grain filling and sealing, it develops depth and clarity that enhances its natural beauty.
Common uses:
Furniture, slab tables, gunstocks, guitars, boxes, musical instruments, and turned items.
