Redheart (aka Chakte Kok or Mexican Redwood) grows in a thin band in the Americas from theMexican Yucatan to Guatemala. Generally a small to medium sized tree, the base is typically only 1 to 1-1/2 feet in diameter. About half to three quarters of the logs heart has the desired pink / red color. There is also a large heart defect that must be cut out for clean lumber.Only about 25-35% of the tree produces high grade lumber for the Commercial market. Redheart is a splendid wood for turning with closed, fine grain that is easy to turn and polish for the amateur and professional alike. Scientific name: Cosmocalyx spectabilis.
