Collection: Poplar, French

French Poplar, Populus nigra, is a fast growing medium to large tree that produces wood with easy workability. The wood is non durable and soft for a hardwood, causing fuzzy surfaces if sharp tools are not used. Fine sanding easily produces a smooth surface. European Poplar glues and finishes well. Trees grow up to 4 feet in diameter with some up to 8 feet in diameter. Most commercially harvested trees are between 1 to 3 feet in diameter when harvested. This tree yields a unique burl that is referred to as Mappa or Mappa Burl on the woodworking market. The wood is commonly used for veneer, plywood, cabinets, furniture, boxes, and many other fine woodworking applications.
