Collection: Pau Rosa

Pau Rosa, Swartzia madagascarensis, can also be called African rosewood, African tulip, and Pau preto. It is found in the African Congo to Eastern Africa. The Eastern variety tends to have darker colors while the Congo variety has more oranges and yellows mimicking Brazilian tulip. Colors include red, orange, yellow, violet purple, and black. In Africa, Pau Rosa is a favorite hardwood for carving animals, utensils, bowls, and other specialty woodworking articles. This dense hardwood cuts, glues, and works satisfactorily, taking a high, smooth natural polish. This unique African wood is in the same family as Katalox from the Mexican Yucatan.
