Red Meranti, a hardwood from the Shorea genus, originates in Southeast Asia and is widely used in woodworking due to its ease of gluing, staining, and finishing. The trees typically grow between 60 and 125 feet tall, with trunk diameters ranging from 3 to 6 feet. It has a specific gravity of 0.61. The wood features a porous end grain and may have either straight or interlocked grain patterns. Although it resembles Mahogany and is sometimes referred to as Philippine Mahogany, it is not a true Mahogany. Another common name for it is Red Lauan. Red Meranti is frequently used throughout Southeast Asia in a variety of woodworking applications.
