Collection: Ebony, Jackalberry

Jackalberry, a true ebony species, is native to the African savannah. Known for its longevity, the tree can reach heights of up to 80 feet and diameters of up to 4 feet, making it one of the giants among ebony trees. Female trees produce edible fruits called jackalberries, which are a favorite among jackals and also enjoyed by many other animals. In contrast, male trees do not bear fruit. The fruit can be eaten fresh from the tree or used to produce brandy and beer. The wood of the jackalberry tree is dense, durable, and highly valued. Interestingly, it is almost immune to termites, thanks to the tannins it contains. This ebony species is commonly used in the making of canoes, furniture, boxes, musical instruments, turned items, and flooring. It works well with sharp hand and power tools, although it has a moderate dulling effect on blades. Enjoy working with this little known species!
