Hackberry has closed grain and shows fine, intricate patterns upon close examination. This wood was cut from a unique tree with strong black irregular grain in the heartwood. It is not truly spalted as the name implies, but looks very similar to spalting in other species so this term is the most easily understood for describing the black veins that run through the wood. Freshly cut in August 2022, this wood is completely wax sealed and has lost around 50% of its original moisture as of September 2022. Some spalted areas are slightly soft. A slight end check or occasional knot may be present, but overall this is very high quality material. This wood is brimming with possibilities for woodturning!
