Collection: Tulipwood

Tulipwood, Dalbergia variabilis or Dalbergia frutescens, is also called jacaranda, bahia rosewood, pink wood, jacaranda rosa, and bois de rose. This rosewood is a small tree (shrub) from Brazil that averages 2-10" in diameter without sapwood. Most billets are 3-5" in diameter yielding small lumber or veneer pieces. It is not plentiful in either. Billets contain a prominent heart defect that prevents clean boards over 4-5" in width. In fact the average width is only 2-3/8". Weighing about 60 pounds per cubic foot, Tulip is a dense hardwood that takes a very high polish. It is prone to splitting when drilling holes, so use of a sharp bit and slow cutting is recommended. This genuine rosewood is used for fine articles including cutlery, turning, jewelry boxes, pens and more. Ships to the USA only due to Cites regulations.
