      DETAILS

Known as Chico Zapote in the Yucatan, this larger than average rainforest tree grows to a height of 60-85 feet and a diameter of 20-30". First logs are up to 30 to 40 feet to the first limb. The trunks have interesting machete cross hatching on all of them because the resin from the trunk of this tree is collected to make "Chiclets gum". A synthetic gum is now used but there is still a demand from the Japanese for the real Chiclets resin. The tree also produces a tasty, sweet fruit which is used for anything from ice cream to beverages. As a result of the scarring of the bark, there are interesting patterns on some boards. Typical boards have Maroon/Red heartwood with creamy white sapwood. Zapote is difficult to work with a strong tendency to check when freshly cut. Southeastern Mexico. This material was cut 1 year ago and is completely wax sealed. It is still considered freshly cut. Zapote is difficult to work with a strong tendency to check when freshly cut. Therefore, we advise using a twice turning method to best preserve the great quality of the wood and reduce checking. There are great colors in this batch! Please be sure you can work with the natural properties of this species. Intermediate.

Chloroxylon swietenia originates in the Celebes islands. In this yellowish-green colored species, figured logs are the rule but can be quite costly as they are usually cut into veneer. Uses for this fine timber include entire suites, furniture, brush backs, mirror backs, marine uses and many other projects. Interestingly, a large bridge with a single arch of 200' was also made from Ceylon Satinwood. The burning of the wood produces a fragrant, restful aroma that can induce a slumber in many and will kill Canaries. Today, Ceylon satinwood is a rare wood that is used for period reproduction furniture and is priced dearly, especially for figured stock. Dry and Ready to use. Air dried for two years. Occasional piece may have some residual moisture. Each piece has a tenon on each end.
