DETAILS

Claro Walnut Burl (Juglans hindsi) is a unique Walnut species that grows right around the area where Cook Woods is located. Combining beautiful violet and brownish black streaks and wild figured burl eyes, Claro walnut burl is favored for high end veneer for cars, jets, turned articles, and exquisite jewelry boxes. Most of the supply originates in orchards as either production walnut trees or wind row trees to slow the wind and show property lines. Claro Walnut Burl is a beautiful wood that is in high demand and short supply. It is dense but works and finishes well with the use of a grain sealer.

DETAILS

Juglans regia emanates from Circassia in the Caucasus Mountain region. It is the original Walnut of Europe. The tree was prized for its walnuts and was planted all throughout Europe and England. Color variations are due to the varied climates and soil conditions in which the tree grows. Juglans walnut is translated to "white walnut" so finding dark striping and marble cake figure is the rare exception. This wood has been prized for centuries for firearm stocks and fine furniture. It works and finishes much better than any Native American Walnut species. The grain is exceptionally fine and holds an edge quite well which makes it exceptional for checkering on rifle and shotgun stocks. English Walnut from the USA is typically grown in orchards where the stump (root system) is California Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsii) grafted to the thin shelled English Walnut. English Walnut trees are generally small due to a weaker root system and do not produce a large amount of nuts. Claro Walnut root systems are very strong and in a sense turbo charge the growth of walnuts which is the goal of the nut producers. A plentiful, thin-shelled nut of high quality is produced. A wonderful by-product of the grafting is a California Claro Walnut burl underground and a larger than usual English Walnut trunk. Black or dark streaks are produced in a small amount of trees and there is a lot of discussion as to why certain trees have more of the desired streaking while others may not have any at all. When trees produce exceptionally large trunks and stunning striping, they are often used for firearms. Rifle blanks often sell for between $500 to $2,500 with some stock blanks fetching upwards of $5,000 each!

All of the wood in this special was cut from marble cake logs of exceptional quality.  Pieces are mostly fresh cut but some pieces have aged up to a year. Colors range from high contrast dark lines to lighter colored streaks or more homogenous grain.  There is less than 20% sapwood in the majority of blanks with most being all heartwood.

Light color is soft spalting that will dent with a fingernail.  The dark piece is exhibition marble cake.

All of this wood was cut from marble cake logs of exceptional quality.  Colors range from high contrast dark lines to lighter colored streaks or more homogenous grain. These pieces have lost anywhere from 30-70% of their original moisture. Larger pieces still have more moisture and will either need to be twice turned or aged.

This is a butt stock blank for a rifle or shotgun. This piece will need to dry for about 2 years. Heavy figure and beautiful marble cake! There is a 2-1/2" check on edge grain near numbers (see pictures). There is a bark incursion and a small check on the opposite edge at the other end. The defects should fall outside of the template.
