Mun Ebony is a rare species from Southeast Asia that is characterized by beautiful black striping with brown contrast. The wood is dense and similar to Black & White Ebony. It is possible to obtain a high glass-like natural polish when turning this wood. W16797: Best heartwood face is clean. The other face with a sapwood streak on the edge has a check that is 16″ long. This appears to be about 1/4″ deep. The board has a clean width of 4-7/8″ down to 4-1/2″ at the very end. Ideal for guitar sides or any other high end application. Air dried slowly for 3-1/2 years. Wax sealed ends.

Although not a true Ebony, Texas Ebony is just as dense and has similar working properties with less of a tendency to split. This is a very rare species that seldom makes it to market. We were fortunate enough to obtain some magnificent stock with some very long and wide widths. Most stock has air dried 3 yrs. & is surfaced on 2 sides. Texas Ebony somewhat resembles Bocote (cordia sp.) Bone dry Texas Ebony! Nice translucent goldens with some darker ring stripes. W16734: Planer skip on one face. Perfectly quartersawn.

From equatorial Africa, Gabon Ebony is usually found in wet lowlands near rivers and swaps. Devoid of color, Gabon Ebony has ink black with lighter streaks. Only a small percentage of Ebony (three to five percent) produce the highest quality jet black Ebony. Most pieces contain 50-70% sapwood with deep heart checks and voids in the heart with fall off of 80-90%. Ebony is hard and costly to produce, which makes it a rare species to obtain. It is difficult to work, glues satisfactorily, and has a tendency to want to split, but takes a really nice polish that makes it worth the work. Ebony is a treasured hardwood that was used by the Egyptian Pharaohs over 3,000 years ago. Diospyrus crassiflora. Nice black! A few small pin holes and a rough edge. Great overall color and quality. Stripes on one edge of the board.
