Sunset Wood

W16894
$59.99
Qty: 1
W16894 specs.:
5 lbs. 16-1/8″ x 3-3/4″ x 3-5/8″

Emanating From Asia, this is a unique species that is slightly oily like Teak and has a similar musky smell.  The wood ages to take on sunset like yellows, oranges, and darker shades with exposure.  Excellent for inlay and intarsia, this wood is rare and in short supply.  Surface checking on boards is common and needs to be worked with or around.  We try to clean the boards up as best as possible so there is less fall off for customers.  Sunset wood is truly beautiful in appearance, easy to turn and polishes well.  Knots and small burl eyes are present in some boards. W16894: This is the largest blank we have! 1″ end check.  Dry and wax sealed.

Once described as being rarer than diamonds, this wood has never been available in quantity.  Also called red ivory wood, it was used by the Zulu chief for his spears.  The penalty for possession by others was death.  The wood is dense and is difficult to work requiring sharp tools.  Available in small sizes ranging from pen blanks to occasionally 2 x 2″ stock or possibly 4/4 lumber not exceeding 3′ in length in narrow widths.  Fiddle back or curl is sometimes present and makes exceptional fine articles.  We have curly pink ivory ukulele back and side sets available.  They are not listed on our instrument site yet but will be soon.  The best wood has watermelon reds and pinks.  Colors range from red, pink, orange, and creamy yellow to white sapwood.  Dried for many years and ready to use.  Wax sealed.  Nice watermelon reds and pink.

Pterocarpus indicus Amboyna may also be called: Kiabooca or Angsana. Originally emanating from the Island of Amboyna, it is also from Borneo and other South East Asian countries. The name Kiabooca means twisted wood which refers to the burls that are produced. Once available in quantity in the Empire period from 1804 through 1815. Used primarily for furniture. Amboyna has become a rarity that is very scarce and is even difficult to obtain in veneer form in America. The wood is dense and course making it difficult to work and finish. Despite the shortcomings of the workability of this species it turns satisfactorily and takes a nice high polish. Amboyna is The World’s most popular and sought after burl thus leading to a short supply. Dry and wax sealed.  Great colors and interesting grain!  W16898: We are not charging for the last 5″ because of a check.

Cinnamumum camphor. A rare burl that is highly prized. Unlike most highly figured burls camphor is very stable requiring very little special care in its conversion from large burls to cut blanks. Most burls are very delicate requiring years of knowledge and experience to carefully cut and season. Camphor is usually available in veneer form and occasionally blocks and squares. We sell a lot of camphor for electric guitars as it makes a delightful top! Smelling of root beer the fragrance is either loved or despised. Most like the smell although it can be very strong with green stock. South east Asia. Dry and ready to use.  Wax sealed ends.  Lots of burl eyes.
