Myrtlewood is renowned throughout the Pacific Northwest for its excellent machining and finishing properties as well as its beautiful color, spicy aroma, and figure. Also known as Bay Laurel, California Olive, Pepper wood, or Spice tree wood, this versatile hardwood grows only in Oregon and Northernmost California. Colors range drastically even in the same log so that a range from golden yellow, green, black, brown, tan, and violet can exist. Each board is unique, making each project a one of a kind. Flame or fiddleback is a rare quality that few boards posses. Myrtle wood is great for the beginner and expert alike. W16893: Partially air dried and wax sealed.

Amboyna

W16897
$16.50
Qty: 1
W16897 specs.:
2 lbs. 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ x 1-3/4″

Pterocarpus indicus Amboyna may also be called: Kiabooca or Angsana. Originally emanating from the Island of Amboyna, it is also from Borneo and other South East Asian countries. The name Kiabooca means twisted wood which refers to the burls that are produced. Once available in quantity in the Empire period from 1804 through 1815. Used primarily for furniture. Amboyna has become a rarity that is very scarce and is even difficult to obtain in veneer form in America. The wood is dense and course making it difficult to work and finish. Despite the shortcomings of the workability of this species it turns satisfactorily and takes a nice high polish. Amboyna is The World’s most popular and sought after burl thus leading to a short supply. Dry and wax sealed.  Great colors and interesting grain! W16897: Crosscut figured turning blank.

Oregon Big Leaf Maple is slightly coarser than European or Eastern Hard Rock Maple and as so is somewhat harder to work. Despite this, the beauty of the wood easily overcomes any difficulties in working. It has excellent color variations that range from white to coral pink & light brown. Boards of Big Leaf Maple usually have figure & color variations; no two boards are the same. This is another reason that Maple is such a fun wood for those who seek a creative flare in their projects. Both of these have intense figured and black spalt lines!  Bone dry and wax sealed.

7 lbs. 7-1/2″ x 7-7/16″ x 3-5/16″

Cinnamumum camphor. A rare burl that is highly prized. Unlike most highly figured burls camphor is very stable requiring very little special care in its conversion from large burls to cut blanks. Most burls are very delicate requiring years of knowledge and experience to carefully cut and season. Camphor is usually available in veneer form and occasionally blocks and squares. We sell a lot of camphor for electric guitars as it makes a delightful top! Smelling of root beer the fragrance is either loved or despised. Most like the smell although it can be very strong with green stock. South east Asia. Dry and ready to use.  Wax sealed ends.  Lots of burl eyes.

Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsi) is a unique Walnut species that grows right around the area where Cook Woods is located. Combining beautiful violet and brownish black streaks with the browns or Eastern walnut (Juglans Nigra). Claro walnut and English walnut have been favored for high end rifles and shotguns by many over the years. They are also used for guitars of various kinds and many other applications including fine furniture, boxes, and high quality turned items. Most of the supply originates in orchards as either production walnut trees (English grafted to the Claro roots) or wind row trees to slow the wind and show property lines (Claro without graft). Claro is a beautiful wood that is in high demand and short supply. Claro Walnut is dense but works and finishes well with the use of a grain sealer. Fresh cut and wax sealed.  Some have some very nice colors and figure. W16655: Exhibition Grade. Really tight eyes.
