Piratinera guianensis, Snakewood, is also known as Letter wood, Speckled wood, and Leopard wood. Its Latin name literally means Guiana sea pirate. Considered by experts to be the World’s rarest commercially available species. The wood is difficult to work and dry wood can still check if it is heated while sanding. Expect to have 50% or less wood usable from any piece of wood available. Despite its difficultly in working, it is a beautiful wood that has reds and blacks in a traditional Viper pattern. This is undoubtedly where it acquired the name Snakewood. The tree is small, slender, and grows up to a foot in diameter and 40-60′ tall. There is a varying amount of figure in each tree so each log can produce very different grades of lumber. Uses include: violin bows, parasols, canes, pens, bottle stoppers, umbrella handles, pool cues, and fishing pole butts. Primarily found in Suriname. 2007 inventory that is dry and ready to use. Most is quartersawn and figured. Several of these are ideal for guitar bridge blanks! W13972: 3/4″ end check on one end only. W13973: Suitable for a Guitar Bridge Blank. W13974: Small hairline surface check on one edge 1-1/4″ long and probably about 1/16″ deep. W13975: 3-1/2″ split on one end. We are billing for a 6″ clean blank. W13976: 2-1/2″ check on the edge. W13977: Suitable for Guitar Bridge Blank.

Originating in Europe, Olive (Oleo Europa) is available in thick slabs cut from large trunks in its native country of Europe. Root stock was successfully transplanted to California in the late 1800′s and early 1900′s. Orchard trees in California have been cultivated into shorter and more shrubby trees to ease mechanical harvesting of Olives, which does not allow for the production of larger trunks as in European Olive. As a result, the California variety produces incredible figure and crotch wood. The down side is that orchard trees generally have more reaction wood in them and consequently dry with substantial movement and checking if not properly cared for. We recommend the Italian lumber for furniture and the Californian for fine turned articles and small projects. This is the same olive that is sent from the “Holy land” It has just been grown and cultivated elsewhere. Air dried slowly over 4 years. Ready to use! Fine closed grain with fine alternating contrasting color. Wax sealed and ready to use. Most have minor defects that you can work with or around. W13983: Knot on face. Quartersawn; Curly. W13985: Live edge. Quartersawn; Curly. W13986: Quartersawn; Curly. W13988: Knot on edge of face and edge.

Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsi) is a unique Walnut species that grows right around the area where Cook Woods is located. Combining beautiful violet and brownish black streaks with the browns or Eastern walnut (Juglans Nigra). Claro walnut and English walnut have been favored for high end rifles and shotguns by many over the years. They are also used for guitars of various kinds and many other applications including fine furniture, boxes, and high quality turned items. Most of the supply originates in orchards as either production walnut trees (English grafted to the Claro roots) or wind row trees to slow the wind and show property lines (Claro without graft). Claro is a beautiful wood that is in high demand and short supply. Claro Walnut is dense but works and finishes well with the use of a grain sealer. Kiln dried and ready to use. Lumber is surfaced and the bowl blanks are wax sealed.

Also known as Ciricote, this rare species is only found in a small portion of Central America. It is denser than Rosewoods at .95 density. It is a little brittle but has a crisp, bright tone when used in instruments. Beautiful spider-webbing is reminiscent of Brazilian Rosewood. Patterns like valleys, plateaus, & mountains make a stunning landscape figure (or what some refer to as spider-webbing). Our Ziricote is imported in log form so that we can control the conversion of the wood in our sawmill. It turns to an extremely high glass-like polish. Kiln dried and surfaced. A few have a clear sell (dark ones). Some of these are suitable for guitar fingerboards or Ukuleles. W14010: 1 clear face. The other face and 2 edges have checks. Argentine Lignum Vitae (or Vera) is a high quality timber that is native to South America, growing around the borders of Argentina, Bolivia & Paraguay. Also called Palo Santo, which means “holy wood” in Spanish, the heartwood in this wood ranges from brown, black to green with thin yellow sapwood that offers nice contrast. Most pieces appear green in color. Changes to a beautiful blue green hue when aged for a short period of time after working. Specific gravity of this species is between .92 and 1.1. This wood is highly fragrant, in fact, its oil of Guaiac (or guayacol) is used as an ingredient in perfumes. This oil is also appreciated for skin healing attributes and the healing of stomach problems. The wood turns to an absolute color reflective finish that is incredibly smooth. Cut from large logs with prime color and aroma! Dry and ready to use. A grade unless noted.
