Hawaiian Koa has been treasured for hundreds of years by the Hawaiians. They have used it for anything from outrigger canoes, paddles, boxes, furniture, to recently Ukuleles. It is an excellent tone wood which produces a rich, warm sound. Supply of Koa is getting scarce as the Hawaiians have only recently started replanting their beloved Hawaiian Koa trees. Koa is renowned for its iridescent shimmer and luscious color which ranges from tan to warm gold with brown and black accents. The iridescence in this wood is particularly exceptional on the quarter. Workability of Hawaiian Koa is similar to Genuine Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla). It has open grain and works well. Hawaii. W16774: AAAAA Grade. Incredible Koa!  Ideal for small fine articles. W16775: AA+ grade with nice Koa colors!  Dry and surfaced with planer skip on one face.

Pterocarpus indicus Amboyna may also be called: Kiabooca or Angsana. Originally emanating from the Island of Amboyna, it is also from Borneo and other South East Asian countries. The name Kiabooca means twisted wood which refers to the burls that are produced. Once available in quantity in the Empire period from 1804 through 1815. Used primarily for furniture. Amboyna has become a rarity that is very scarce and is even difficult to obtain in veneer form in America. The wood is dense and course making it difficult to work and finish. Despite the shortcomings of the workability of this species it turns satisfactorily and takes a nice high polish. Amboyna is The World’s most popular and sought after burl thus leading to a short supply. W16776: A great slice with a rough natural edge.  5″ end check at one end and a grub hole in the same end.  Dry!

Fine, closed grain makes this Central American hardwood machine easily & finish well. The unique brilliant red color with black undertones is unusual and unmatched in other exotic hardwoods. The Mayans refer to this hardwood is Chakte Koke. For best results in finishing, please use a UV inhibitor as the wood turns honey/brown when exposed to sunlight. We have had good results with keeping the red color of this wood when it is finished. Another nice aspect of this hardwood is that it is excellent for turnery due to its great machinability. Ziricote

Also known as Siricote, this rare species is only found in a small portion of Central America. It is denser than Rosewoods at .95 density. It is a little brittle but has a crisp, bright tone when used in instruments. Beautiful spider-webbing is reminiscent of Brazilian Rosewood. Patterns like valleys, plateaus, & mountains make a stunning landscape figure (or what some refer to as spider-webbing). Our Ziricote is imported in log form so that we can control the conversion of the wood in our sawmill. It turns to an extremely high glass-like polish. Central America W16781: Highly Figured! Oregon Big Leaf Maple is slightly coarser than European or Eastern Hard Rock Maple and as so is somewhat harder to work. Despite this, the beauty of the wood easily overcomes any difficulties in working. It has excellent color variations that range from white to coral pink & light brown. Boards of Big Leaf Maple usually have figure & color variations; no two boards are the same. This is another reason that Maple is such a fun wood for those who seek a creative flare in their projects. Both of these have intense figured and black spalt lines!  Bone dry and wax sealed.

Litchi Chinensis is a subtropical evergreen tree that produces lychee fruits which are edible.  Growing to heights of up to 40′ it has a long lifespan and is favored for gardens as the tops are rounded and it has a nice appearance.  The wood is incredibly dense allowing it to take an incredible natural polish.  Figured or color patterns are common adding to the beauty of the wood.  Drying should be left to the sawmills as it will check and twist during the process if utmost care is not used.  originally from China it is propagated in many areas Worldwide for its fruit. A unique species. Claro Walnut (Juglans hindsi) is a unique Walnut species that grows right around the area where Cook Woods is located. Combining beautiful violet and brownish black streaks with the browns or Eastern walnut (Juglans Nigra). Claro walnut and English walnut have been favored for high end rifles and shotguns by many over the years. They are also used for guitars of various kinds and many other applications including fine furniture, boxes, and high quality turned items. Most of the supply originates in orchards as either production walnut trees (English grafted to the Claro roots) or wind row trees to slow the wind and show property lines (Claro without graft). Claro is a beautiful wood that is in high demand and short supply. Claro Walnut is dense but works and finishes well with the use of a grain sealer. W16786: Quarter to rift sawn with nice fiddleback and color stripes!  Live sapwood edge.  Partially air dried. W16787: Kiln dried and ready to use.  Suitable for instruments.

This Eucalyptus sp.  is a native Australian timber with distinctive red heartwood and white sapwood.  Dense, with a smooth, durable finish possible.  Burl eyes develop incursions.  Be prepared to fill the incursions with minerals like Turquoise or other fine choices. Interesting figure and colors! Beautiful with tight burl eyes! Small incursions and small checks are normal. W16788: Small surface checks on burl eyes on both faces.  This is a highly figured electric or bass guitar billet!  Air dried for 1-1/2 years.  Live edges.

Amazon Rosewood is, in our opinion, the most defined and beautiful Platymiscium of them all. Nine years ago the Owner discovered this species at a mill on the Amazon River while taking a small local boat procuring sources for the World’s finest woods. Colors of Amazon Rosewood range from rich reds, orange, pink, and violet to black lines with defined sapwood. No two boards are alike so expect a combination of colors and contrast in a stunning visual palette! This wood is ideal for musical instruments s it has a strong visual and tonal presence. Excellent large boards of Amazon Rosewood!  Kiln dried and surfaced.  A few small pin holes here and there.  Minor planer skip. Wonderful colors!

Figured Santos Mahogany

Santos mahogany is not a true mahogany but has similar grain structure and appearance.  Slightly denser, it is still easily worked and has an aromatic fragrance that smells more like a rosewood than the majority of true rosewoods (Dalbergia).  Interlocked grain makes a striped appearance on quartered stock.  Kiln dried and usually surfaced on two sides.  Brazil. Myroxylon balsamum. Also can be called Cabreuva.  W16796: One pin hole and  a1″ hairline check on one face.  Nice figure and aroma!
