Once in a while there is a figured log that makes it through that is not cut into veneer. The wood is dense and somewhat difficult to work and is used for anything from cabinets to floors, jewelry boxes and fine turnings. Kiln dried and ready to use. Planer skip on faces. Great for guitars and other high end articles! W15712: 2″ check in edge.

Piratinera guianensis, Snakewood, is also known as Letter wood, Speckled wood, and Leopard wood. Its Latin name literally means Guiana sea pirate. Considered by experts to be the World’s rarest commercially available species. The wood is difficult to work and dry wood can still check if it is heated while sanding. Expect to have 50% or less wood usable from any piece of wood available. Despite its difficultly in working, it is a beautiful wood that has reds and blacks in a traditional Viper pattern. This is undoubtedly where it acquired the name Snakewood. The tree is small, slender, and grows up to a foot in diameter and 40-60′ tall. There is a varying amount of figure in each tree so each log can produce very different grades of lumber. Uses include: violin bows, parasols, canes, pens, bottle stoppers, umbrella handles, pool cues, and fishing pole butts. Primarily found in Suriname. W15714: Heart check and split. Several checks in the rounded edge. W15715: Surface checks on the rounded face. Cut face has one check. Better than average

Oregon Big Leaf Maple is slightly coarser than European or Eastern Hard Rock Maple and as so is somewhat harder to work. Despite this, the beauty of the wood easily overcomes any difficulties in working. It has excellent color variations that range from white to coral pink & light brown. Boards of Big Leaf Maple usually have figure & color variations; no two boards are the same. This is another reason that Maple is such a fun wood for those who seek a creative flare in their projects. Kiln dried and sanded on both faces. Great figure. Some are ideal for instruments! W15716: AAAA Grade Sausage Quilt. W15717: AAA Grade. 1″ long check on the corner edge only. W15718: Best face is AAA.

Also known as Indian Apple, this unique species from South America has golden sapwood when first milled that darkens to a rich American Cherry color within a month or two. The heartwood is marketed in veneer form as Tineo. Heartwood colors are strikingly beautiful with a bluish black variegated stripe through pinkish red. Steinway Piano Company makes a high end grand piano out of this wood! Tineo is unstable until dried with considerable shrikage during the drying process. Our larger turning stock is sold freshly cut and will need to be twice turned or allowed to move after shaping.
