European Pear wood is a beautiful, finely grained hardwood that is commonly steamed to bring out desirable colors such as pinks and reds. Some logs have sought after "flame or curl" and produce striking lumber that is well suited for many uses. Straight or even grained wood is used for carving, chess men, and print blocks. Pear has also been dyed black as a substitute for Ebony. Guitars and recorders from the woodwinds can use "flamed" or fine even grained lumber interchangeably depending on the craftsman's desires. This lumber is kiln dried and ready to use. It is excellent for turning and carving as it is very easy to cut and takes a smooth, soft finish. All material in this special is premium grade, beautiful stock that is 90% free of defects excepting a few boards may have a bug hole, small surface check, planer skip, or a knot on an edge. Some boards are suitable to be used as instruments (as mentioned on each line item). In these boards a minor defect or two may be present that you will have to work around that generally falls outside of your instrument pattern size. We have noted the way these boards are sawn for your ease of determining use. Boards shown with “bird peck” have small black defects where a bird has pecked, causing scarring & incursions to form in the wood. These defects are small dark lines that are mostly sound but can have some checks in them. These are great for box parts and other small articles but are not suitable for instruments.
Light figure near both live edges.
