Santos Mahogany ![]() front & back of same board shown
Santos mahogany is not a true mahogany but has similar grain structure and
appearance. Slightly denser, it is still easily worked and has an aromatic
fragrance that smells more like a rosewood than the majority of true
rosewoods (Dalbergia). Interlocked grain makes a striped appearance on
quartered stock. Kiln dried and usually surfaced on two sides. Brazil.
Myroxylon balsamum. Also can be called Cabreuva. There is some planer hit
and miss.

click to enlarge Well suited for use in ukuleles! Air dried for over a year and surfaced on two sides. There are live edges and a few minor incursions on the face. 3/16" twist and 1/8" bow. If you are worried about the movement of this board cut it into the ukulele billet sizes for the back and sides and then surface with a jointer or planer to cut the piece flat and then resawn into the 5/32" and 7/32" thick side and back thicknesses. This is perfectly flat sawn to show the quilted figure!

From an FSC mill in the
Central America. This was blown down by a hurricane. There are two
live edges and some incredible figure that only occurred on one
half of this log. We milled the log in Oregon and made guitar sets
out of most of it. This is large enough for ukuleles. Air dried
for a year and surfaced on two sides.
