Swartzia cubensis is listed as a USDA substitute for stringed instruments in two different publications. There are a multitude of names that it is commercially sold - any name from Brazilian ebony, bastard rosewood, ironwood, and many more. There are pin holes present mostly in the sapwood. Katalox A dense wood that is a very good substitute for African ebony as the density is the same and has good acoustic properties. This board has some excellent color and figure in most of the board. African ebony can have figure in it but is very difficult to see unless the board has lighter stripes. Katalox ages to a darker black. Surfaced on two sides and air dried for 4 years.
