| About Us: | Cook Woods' roots go back to Chris Cook, the co-founder of Cook Woods. He grew up the son of a devout environmentalist and Park Ranger and thus, learned through experience how to carefully reduce environmental impact while still running a wood business. Much of the woods that Cook Woods obtains are salvaged or reclaimed for better uses. For example, the majority of our short lumber is purchased to provide some income for small sawmills overseas. This keeps value on all wood and prevents it from being burned for scrap. You can help be more environmentally safe by using shorts whenever possible. This reduces the amount of wood that is cut in forests Worldwide. Our Western, US woods are also obtained with the environment in mind. We use hardwoods such as Myrtle, Madrone, and Maple to name a few. These grown in large stands of Douglas Fir where the Fir trees grow best in a single canopy, striving to be the tallest. Underneath the canopy are the hardwood trees that we use. So, when the Douglas Fir stands are clear cut, most often the hardwood trees are the least desirable and are taken to chip mills or firewood yards to be dealt with as a waste product. We intercept a lot of these logs and reclaim them for better use. Though not completely green, it is a step in the right direction. After learning about the need for instrument wood, co-owner Chris Cook started learning which cuts of Rosewood we were receiving from Central America would be suitable for instruments. He cut several Rosewood logs into sets and had good feedback from Luthiers. Today, we select logs from around the World to satisfy the needs of Luthiers. Being perfectionist with wood, we have preferred to import logs instead of lumber from overseas. This allows us to cut superior sets in a highly controlled environment, reducing waste and decreasing our cost. We strive to provide you with the best quality product possible while continuing to push ourselves towards excellence in the field of instrument wood manufacturing. |
