Camatillo
Dalbergia congestiflora

|
Related to Brazilian Kingwood (Dalbergia caerensis), this beautiful Rosewood is rich with vivid purple & violet colors. Though related to Kingwood, the colors in this wood are more intense and the grain more demarcated. No two boards are alike; this is a very diverse and unique wood. Camatillo comes from Central America where it is selectively logged by hand and harvested from the forest by mules in an environmentally friendly manner. The grain in this wood is rarely straight and generally is figured. There is sapwood on most boards as the tree is relatively small, producing less heartwood than many Rosewoods. This extremely rare Rosewood species holds its purple color better than any other Rosewood. Central America |

Dalbergia congestiflora grows in the Sierra Madre mountains on the Pacific Coast of southern Mexico. It is seldom more than 20' tall. Nationals hike into the forest and cut selected trees then square them into cants that are hauled out by burros. A very rare Dalbergia species that is sometimes called Mexican Kingwood, Para Kingwood, and Camatillo. Usually this is only available in 1" lumber or small turning squares. It is prone to check when drying and is very difficult to obtain solid pieces with any size. The wood is difficult to work but takes a glass like polish with minimal effort. The best colored face is clear. There is checking present in the sapwood on the other 3 faces. Air dried for 5 years. Large or oddly shaped packages or packages over 45 lbs. will have CUSTOM shipping rates that will be calculated after you checkout
