 Blue Gum

Australian Blue Gum grows to large sizes which can produce lumber 6-12' long or better with widths of 6" and wider.  Blue Gum (or Eucalyptus) is difficult to dry; however, once it is kiln dried it is stable in service.  You will commonly find beautiful basket weave figure in the wood.  Reports show that it is relatively easy to turn & takes a high polish despite its density. Australia.

Blue Gum
At first glance this might not seem like a good turning wood due to it's extreme dense grain and tendency to split and check. We reluctantly turned some to see what we though of this Australian wood. To our delight it turned well with sharp tools and took a very nice silky smooth finish. Generally strait grain stock is the rule for this wood but we cut a nice cluster burl tree that produced exceptional one of a kind figure. We have not seen a tree like this before or after this one! A special wood for unique projects! It glues and works satisfactorily. Australia. There are a few bug holes along the edge only that can be easily turned off. An 8" zone of gum pockets is also present.
