Blue Mahoe
Hibiscus elatus

Hibiscus elatus is from the Islands of the West Indies .  It is the Royal wood of Jamaica and its leaves have been used to wrap Cuban cigars.  The wood is one of two woods in the World that has a pronounced metallic blue color in the better grades of lumber.  Dense and moderately easy to work, it takes a nice polish and is very iridescent when quartersawn.  It is an excellent wood for ukuleles and other stringed instruments as it has a bright tap tone with good sustain.  We have a limited number of beautifully quartered sets available. This is a rare wood that is hardly ever on the World market.  Well suited for fine furniture, instruments, and other creations. West Indies

At first glance this might not seem like a good turning wood due to it's extreme dense grain and tendency to split and check. We reluctantly turned some to see what we though of this Australian wood. To our delight it turned well with sharp tools and took a very nice silky smooth finish. Generally strait grain stock is the rule for this wood but we cut a nice cluster burl tree that produced exceptional one of a kind figure. We have not seen a tree like this before or after this one! A special wood for unique projects! It glues and works satisfactorily. Australia

Rare wood from The Caribbean with metallic blue colors. Kiln dried, S2S. Live edges, 5" end check, knots.
