Black Palm
(Black Pambil)
Ireartea deltoidea

Black Palm is a member of the grass family. This slender Palm is seldom  more than 5-8" in diameter, with a hollow center. A very large square would be 2" x 2" with the average being 1" x 1".  Lengths up to 4 ft are possible. This turns better than Red Palm (because it is dense with closer fibers).  Use CA glue to aide in finishing. Black Palm is somewhat challenging to turn because of the fibrous nature of the wood. It goes from being very dense in the black material to less dense in the cream colored material.  This is the reason it can be challenging to work. This material can be glued up to make boards of your choice width because the squares that we sell are perfectly square.  Once you glue up the material, surface it to your desired thickness and it is very difficult if not impossible to tell  where it has been glued together. Black Palm is well worth the challenge! It comes out magnificently, unlike any other wood. Central America

** The photos seen here are stock photos that represent the pieces available for purchase. All pieces are randomly pulled and will have variations in grain, pattern, and moisture content. Some of these pieces will be completely wax sealed, others may have just ends wax sealed depending on the species. Pieces may contain small defects such as checks or incursions but overall are very high quality and are perfectly suited for turning. Most defects will turn off. The pictures listed for each item give a good representation of what you expect. If you wish to select a specialized grain pattern we will select from different stock than what is shown here. Black Palm 2 Pack

The densest member of the grass family we have found from Central America. As such, it is basically a bundle of small straw that are fibrous. There are not any growth rings visible. The wood is difficult to work but can produce some very nice pens, bottle stoppers, and end grain book matched inlayed box tops. Our stock is dried and generally surfaced on two sides or more. Wax sealed ends are common. Use a good CA glue to stabilize your turned article when you have sanded smooth with 100 grit and then let the glue dry for several hours and then finish sand. This is a great way to save $3-4 per pen blank when you stabilize your own! Call us with any questions you have! 1-877-672-5275. Black palm is used for native spears and arrow shafts making a formidable weapon of choice! There is a 6" end split on one square. These are the biggest out of the whole sea container load!
